SUMMARY:George Washington: The Perfect Man For America
DESCRIPTION:George Washington is America’s greatest hero. He was our greatest soldier. He was also our greatest President.  His contemporaries already knew that he was a man whose importance to the nation could never be questioned.  One of the most honored statesmen of the day had this to say when Washington died: “First in war\, first in peace\, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.”  \n \nGeorge Washington was tall\, athletic\, and absolutely fearless. Yet his military career was spotted before Congress appointed him to be the commanding General the head of the Continental Army\, Click here to read a fascinating account of why he is still the highest-ranking American military officer of all time. Although we remember him as a great General\, his first year of command was disastrous!   \nBut then at the Battle Of Trenton. General Washington’s courage\, daring\, and heroic leadership became evident to the world. That battle is best remembered for the breathtaking Christmas crossing of the Delaware River\, but it also holds the amazing distinction of the first military battle ever fought in an urban setting! More importantly\, the Battle Of Trenton directly changed the course of the history of America – and the entire world! It is the single most important battle in the history of the USA. \n \nClick here to read more about why the Battle of Trenton is so important to the history of the world. \nAfter the Revolution\, of course\, Washington’s fame and importance only grew. As the first President of the United States\, he helped turn America from a series of promises laid out in the Declaration of Independence into a living Republic that continues to shine as a beacon of freedom and hope to people and nations around the world. \nThis multimedia presentation will offer a new perspective on the personality of the greatest American of all time! \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Cole Porter - Risque Master Of American Music

Cole Porter lived in both psychic and physical pain much of his life. His life story\, his personality\, and his unforgettable music combine for a memorable multimedia presentation! \nTHIS PRESENTATION IS IN PERSON!! CALL THE NORTHBROOK SENIOR CENTER TO REGISTER!

SUMMARY:Queen Elizabeth
DESCRIPTION:At this writing\, Queen Elizabeth is the longest-reigning monarch in the world. When she ascended the throne\, a shy young girl saw her uncle abdicate the throne and advocate pro-German views in the years leading up to World War II. She watched as her father struggled to overcome a speech impediment and then work tirelessly to inspire the British people during the Second World War. His death at a young age propelled an unprepared and timid girl to the most important throne in Europe. \nQueen Elizabeth’s 50-year reign has seen enormous changes to the British monarchy\, the nation she serves\, and to the world at large. We will examine how Queen Elizabeth has grown in the job despite major stumbles\, including her epic mishandling of the sudden\, tragic death of Princess Diana. Her unparalleled life gives us great insight into the changes brought about by a rapidly changing world in the wake of World War II. \n

SUMMARY:Offbeat Broadway
DESCRIPTION:The Tony Awards are right around the corner\, so let’s celebrate with laughs and some great music! I’ve learned that some Broadway musicals that are not big hits still produce unforgettable music\, delightful characters\, and fascinating plots. \nIf you think a musical about an Irish dreamer stealing a pot of gold from a \nleprechaun and coming to America where he gets involved in a  Civil Rights dispute sounds farfetched\, let’s learn about Finian’s Rainbow! After all\, who would have guessed a musical about singing pussycats in a London alley would be a hit!? Join me to look at some delightful and memorable shows that you may never have seen! \nHere is a sneak peak – we will look at “Xanadu” in which a struggling artist’s prayers for inspiration are answered when one of the Muses – the daughters  of Zeus – roller skates down from Mount Olympus to inspire him to open a You are in  for a fun and insightful look at shows like Finian’s Rainbow\, Call Me Madam\, Xanadu\, and Babes In Arms\, none of which was a huge smash\, yet each of which is delightful and important in its own way!

SUMMARY:The Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:Most Americans simply do not know very much about the Revolutionary War.   \nAlthough certain images from the Revolutionary War are seared into our memory – Washington Crossing the Delaware and the signing of the Declaration of Independence –  many people would be hard-pressed to name a major battle\, a leading general\, or even how the War For Independence ended.  Recent events in America have caused some to question whether we should even have statues of George Washington on public display. \nTHE REVOLUTIONARY WAR\n In this four-part series on the Revolutionary War\, we will examine why the freest and most prosperous colonials in the world decided to declare independence from a mother country that had protected them. We will look at the roots of the war\, the Declaration of Independence\, the early battles\, including Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill\, before transitioning into a longer look at the seven years of fighting necessary for America to begin its experiment in participatory democracy. We will also look at the amazing and diverse leaders who guided America. Benjamin Franklin\,James Monroe\, John Adams\, Paul Revere\, George Washington\, Thomas Jefferson\, and Alexander Hamilton will be some of the people we will meet. I encourage you to learn more about how America came to be! \n

SUMMARY:Lincoln's Year Decision: 1863
DESCRIPTION:1863 was a turning point in America. Abraham Lincoln had struggled with the question of how to handle the issue of slavery. He was personally opposed to human beings’ enslavement but didn’t think the government had the power to end it. In this powerful multimedia presentation\, we will look at how the battles and trials of 1863 changed America and led Lincoln to declare the Emancipation Proclamation. Among the fascinating topics we will look at will be the Gettysburg address\, the major battles of 1863\, Lincoln’s declaration of the first thanksgiving day\, and how Lincoln’s view on emancipation changed.\nIn 1863\, Abraham Lincoln made the rationale for winning the war\, not just the preservation of the Union but also the destruction and elimination of the barbaric practice of slavery. At Gettysburg\, Lincoln made one of the most memorable speeches of all time\, declaring\,| “that government of the people\, by the people\, for the people\, shall not perish from the earth.”  \nIn 1863 Lincoln showed his great compassion and deep faith by declaring the first National Thanksgiving Day – despite the carnage of the War. \nFinally\, as battles raged and riots erupted\, President Abraham Lincoln announced the \nEmancipation Proclamation. The Proclamation made it clear that the purpose of the Civil War had shifted\, we were no longer in a fight just for national unity. We were now fighting to end the barbaric practice of enslaving human beings. However\, victory against the terrorists was still far from certain. Lincoln’s moral stance elevated the purpose of the War to something noble. \nPlease don’t miss this amazing multimedia presentation! \n

SUMMARY:Jackie Robinson
DESCRIPTION: Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball. The dramatic story of how Branch Rickey defied the baseball establishment by promoting the major leagues the first African American players ever to walk on the field is fascinating. \nHowever\, Jackie Robinson is more than just a symbol of integration.  First\, he was a great baseball player. A great\, great player. And then we have to recognize that Jackie Robinson was a decidedly complex and interesting man both on and off the field. As the baseball overlords knew\, very few men could have stood up against the pressure he faced.   Jackie Robinson’s passionate involvement in the civil rights movement\, his advocacy of minority entrepreneurship\, his involvement in the political world\, and the business world each create a clearer and more complete picture of an important man. \nWe will examine both the famous story of his rise to the major leagues and the private story of what he had to overcome on the path to sports greatness\, including his court-martial during World War II for standing up to racism!. \nPlease don’t miss this amazing multimedia presentation! \n
