This multimedia program covers the fascinating evolution of Lyndon Johnson’s thinking about the government’s role in guaranteeing freedom of equality for African-Americans. LBJ and civil rights may seem like an unlikely tandem. But ultimately\, other than Abraham Lincoln\, no president did more to advance the cause of African-Americans than Lyndon Baines Johnson! \nLBJ and Civil Rights\nWe will begin with a quick overview of Johnson’s personal sympathies regarding helping the poor and contrast it with his votes in the House of Representatives against civil rights legislation. Beginning in 1957\, LBJ\, as majority leader\, became a tentative ally of the civil rights movement. As president\, LBJ used all of his political skill and muscle to get Congress to pass two landmark bills that reshaped justice and upended the electoral map in ways that are still important. \nThe Civil Rights Act of 1964 finally ended legal segregation in America. The Voting Rights Act  (1965) established the government as a powerful ally in guaranteeing African-Americans in the South would have the right to vote. Few presidents have ever passed two more significant\, breathtaking pieces of legislation. In this multimedia presentation\, we will look at each of the four presidential impeachments that went to trial. \nFirst\, we will look at why first we will look at why the 1868 Republican House Of Representatives impeached Democrat Andrew Johnson for willfully and blatantly violating a law\, the hotly contested Tenure of Office Act. \nNext\, we will examine why the 1998 Republican House Of Representatives impeached Democratic President Bill Clinton for lying under oath to a grand jury after a sex scandal. \nFinally\, we will look at the two impeachment trials of Donald Trump. As the only President to be impeached a second time (no one else came close)\, what we learned about impeachment during his two trials will have significant ramifications for the future. \nThe first\, a primarily partisan matter\, centered on alleged corruption in the Presidents dealing with a foreign power to win an election. DESCRIPTION: History Vs. the Movies: Mississippi Burning\nMississippi Burning: The Civil Rights Era is one of the most exciting\, important\, and electrifying eras in American history. \nIt had everything from a cinematic standpoint: dynamic lead characters\, powerful and determined villains\, mystery\, mood\, motivation\, and manipulation. Nonetheless\, movies about the era have generally not been hits\, and despite the hype about Selma\, no great masterpiece of filmmaking has yet emerged. “Mississippi Burning”  is a brilliant film but utter nonsense from a historical point of view. “Selma” is a maddening jumble. In its sections on Martin Luther King\, it is extraordinary. In its sections on Lyndon Johnson\, it is entirely misleading. “Ghosts of Mississippi” is an earnest and well-made film about the trial of the murderer of Medgar Evers. However\, unless you already knew quite a bit about Medgar Evers\, you would leave the film wondering who exactly he was. \nSome of the best films about the Civil Rights Movement have been made-for-TV films. Clark Johnson directed “Boycott”  for HBO\, and it combines arresting visuals with superb acting. The Rosa Parks made-for-TV movie was likewise excellent. Spike Lee directed an outstanding documentary\, “Four Little Girls.”  But so far\, a genuine cinematic masterpiece about the Civil Rights Era has eluded filmmakers. \nThis fast-moving and thought-provoking multimedia presentation will look at clips from some films about the Civil Rights Movement.   Our particular focus will be on “Mississippi Burning.” Using inside stories\, personal anecdotes\, and a clear timeline\, we will see how this brilliantly made film distorted history and changed America’s perceptions about the Movement. \nCheck this out: in “Mississippi Burning\,”  the FBI gets an invaluable ship to find where the bodies are buried. The screenwriter and director had to fictionalize where the tip came from. That is because the mystery informant had never been revealed. Working with the brilliant investigative reporter Jerry Mitchell\, I was able to help figure out where the tip had come from – Jerry uncovered the identity of the mysterious “Mr. X.” Click here to find out who he was! \n.
