SUMMARY:The History Of NBC (Mid-Day)
DESCRIPTION:The history of NBC is perhaps the most storied and essential in broadcasting history. Its founder\, the illustrious David Sarnoff\, was the genius who turned a small local radio station into a gigantic\, influential multimedia empire; he always had dreams of greatness\, and his tremendous vision brought his network along with him. His contributions to American popular culture cannot be overstated! \nAlthough CBS had the early advantage in news broadcasting\, NBC (an offshoot of RCA) eventually caught up with Huntley and Brinkley. It took a while for NBC to compete with CBS in radio\, but stars like Bob Hope made it possible. The history of NBC in the television years is especially intriguing. The National Broadcasting\, CompanyThe National Broadcasting Company probably debuted color TV and eventually became a perennial rating champion. \n \nAlong the way\, NBC pioneered morning TV with ” The Today Show\,” and late-night became NBC’s staple with “The Tonight Show” with multitalented host Steve Allen and later the iconic Johnny Carson. And at a time when no one thought that late-night weekend programming would work\, NBC revolutionized television with ”Saturday Night Live.” \nJoin us as we relive the extraordinary and unexpected journey as NBC grew from a local radio station into the “Peacock Network.” \nBonus: Click here to read about a fascinating myth about David Sarnoff\, the founder of NBC and the Titanic! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. If you cannot afford it or feel my programs are not worth $5.00\, please let me know\, and I will grant you a waiver. SUMMARY:The Rise Of Barack Obama
DESCRIPTION:At the 2004 Democratic National Convention\, a then-unknown Illinois state legislator delivered one of the greatest convention speeches in American political history. Overnight\, Barack Obama went from being a “skinny guy with a funny name” to being talked about as a future presidential candidate. \nHis unique personal story and unparalleled rise in American politics make for a fascinating presentation. \nThis multimedia look at Barack Obama will not primarily focus on his presidency or policies. Instead\, we will look deeply at his complex and utterly unique family history as we trace the factors that led to his improbable ascension to the presidency.

SUMMARY:Gene Kelly
DESCRIPTION:It is one of the single most iconic moments in the history of the movies: Gene Kelly dancing with absolute joy in a rainstorm in Singing In The Rain. \nThat unforgettable moment showcases so many things – a brilliant dancer and choreographer at the height of his powers is highlighted on a magnificent set\, singing a glorious song that reflects every reason why we love going to the movies in the first place. \nLike King Kong atop the Empire State Building\, Dorothy clicking her heels\, Indiana Jones running from the boulder or Cary Grant chased by an airplane\, that moment is forever etched in the minds of movie lovers. \nIn this fast moving and fun multimedia biography we will look at the life\, career\, personality and art of the great Gene Kelly. We will trace his Pittsburgh roots and follow him as a cocky kid determined to conquer dance\, Broadway and Hollywood. He redefined dance on the silver screen. Gene Kelly ditched Fred Astaire’s top hot and tails\, replacing them with a sweatshirt and loafers. His masculine dancing\, emphasis on ballet\, inventive use if props and partners all combined to make his films immediately unique and completely unforgettable. We will see clips of him dancing with partners as different as Rita Hayworth\, Fred Astaire\, Judy Garland and Jerry The Mouse! \nCome prepared to smile – and tap your toes!

SUMMARY:The Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:Most Americans simply do not know very much about the Revolutionary War. \nAlthough certain images from the Revolutionary War are seared into our memory – Washington Crossing the Delaware and the signing of the Declaration of Independence –  many people would be hard-pressed to name a major battle\, a leading general\, or even how the War For Independence ended.  Recent events in America have caused some to question whether we should even have statues of George Washington on public display. \nTHE REVOLUTIONARY WAR\nIn this four-part series on the Revolutionary War\, we will examine why the freest and most prosperous colonials in the world decided to declare independence from a mother country that had protected them. We will look at the roots of the war\, the Declaration of Independence\, the early battles\, including Lexington\, Concord\, and Bunker Hill\, before transitioning into a longer look at the seven years of fighting necessary for America to begin its experiment in participatory democracy. We will also look at the amazing and diverse leaders who guided America. Benjamin Franklin\,James Monroe\, John Adams\, Paul Revere\, George Washington\, Thomas Jefferson\, and Alexander Hamilton will be some of the people we will meet. I encourage you to learn more about how America came to be! \n

SUMMARY:The Crime of the Century – The Supermodel\, The Architect\, And the Insane Millionaire
DESCRIPTION:Click here to read more about this amazing story! \nAt the dawn of the 20th century\, America was riveted by the first celebrity murder case in America. Every element of this story is fascinating! \nThe murderer was already famous and so was the victim and so was the murderer’s wife. The venue was famous\, and so were the lawyers involved. The only thing missing was wall-to-wall cable news coverage! As I often say when speaking to audiences: “You can’t make this stuff up!” \nThe Crime: Stanford White\, the most famous architect in America\, was murdered on the rooftop of Madison Square Garden (a building he designed) by Harry K Thaw of Pittsburgh\, the insane millionaire heir to one of America’s great fortunes.  With some justification\, Thaw obsessively believed that Stanford White had drugged and raped Thaw’s teenage wife – the very glamorous and very young showgirl Evelyn Nesbitt. And just to make the story even more tabloid-ready\, Ms. Nesbitt was the first supermodel in American history. \nYou cannot make this stuff up! \nDoes this fantastic and unique true crime story sound just a little familiar? \nIn that case\, it’s because the story of the murder of Stanford White by Harry K. Thaw and the involvement of glamorous Evelyn Nesbit was the basis of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel\, Oscar Award-winning movie\, and Tony Award-winning Broadway musical “Ragtime” and the 1950s potboiler film “The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing.” \nThis fascinating\, one-of-a-kind multimedia presentation will bring to life the vivid celebrities\, lurid crime\, and surprising history of the first crime of the century. \n

SUMMARY:The History Of ABC (PM)
DESCRIPTION:The youngest of the big three broadcasting networks\, the American Broadcasting Company (ABC)\, began as an offshoot of NBC and was for decades mired in third place in the ratings. That began to change when Walt Disney stepped in. Disney helped popularize color broadcasting and led to the development of a new identity for ABC. Nonetheless\, it was not until the 1970s\, with the introduction of young-skewing sitcoms\, that it was entirely clear that ABC would survive!\n\nEventually developing a more youth-oriented schedule\, ABC carved out a special and popular identity of its own. While today the network is primarily known for its endless parade of ‘reality’ shows (“The Bachelor\, “Extreme Makeover\,” “Dancing With The Stars”) and recycled game shows (“The Match Game\,” “Supermarket Sweep\,” Card Sharks); ABC is also the network that brought innovations like “Whose Line Is It Anyway\,” Monday Night Football\,” “Roots” and “The Fugitive\,” as well as 20/20 and Barbara Walters’\, mesmerizing interviews.\n\n\nJoin us for this fun and fascinating multimedia look at a giant of American Broadcasting!\n\n\nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:Hamilton: The Man\, Miranda And The Musical
DESCRIPTION:Who could have predicted that an 818-page biography of America’s first Secretary of the Treasury\, Alexander Hamilton\, would become one of the biggest Broadway smashes of all time? Yet this fascinating blend of history and hip-hop\, political debate\, and show tunes has not only swept the Tony Awards but played to standing-room-only audiences for over 8 years! \nNaturally\, as a historian who lives for Broadway\, I couldn’t wait to be in the audience. And I can tell you that the show more than lives up to its hype. This is an amazing work of genius – a combination of history\, music\, performance\, and thought-provoking content that will long be considered a hallmark in the history of Broadway. \n Alexander Hamilton: The Man\, The Writer\, The Musical\nIn this brand-new\, fast-paced\, and fascinating multimedia presentation\, I will offer audiences a mini-biography of the real Alexander Hamilton and his place in American history. Then we will look at the life and work of Lin-Manuel Miranda\, the genius who created and starred in Hamilton. \nFinally\, we will look at the musical itself. I’ll play excerpts from the songs\, explain the narrative structure and help you have a greater appreciation for the show\, whether you’ve seen it a dozen times already or are seeing it for the first time! \n

SUMMARY:The Election Of 1960
DESCRIPTION:The election of 1960 was one of the most dramatic elections in American history. Until the halted recount in the election of 2000\, it was the closest  Presidential election in our lifetimes.  This riveting multimedia presentation features amazing anecdotes\, entry insights\, and numerous fascinating film clips to help put this most momentous campaign into perspective. \nRichard M. Nixon was coming off of eight years serving as vice president to Dwight D. Eisenhower\, one of the most popular Republican presidents of all time. Nixon had experience in domestic and foreign policy and was a veteran of many tough campaigns. Still very young\, he offered a new face for the Republican Party’s future. He became the first sitting vice president to earn his party’s nomination since John C Breckenridge exactly 100 years earlier. \n  \nJohn F. Kennedy was only a few years younger than Richard Nixon\, whom he considered something of a friend. Kennedy was seen as a lightweight in the Senate\, according to the Democrat’s Majority Leader\, Lyndon Johnson. JFK was criticized for proposing no major legislation during his Senate tenure. \nSignificantly\, John Kennedy often missed long stretches of time in the Senate due to surgeries and hospitalizations. However\, the Massachusetts senator was a war hero\, handsome\, charismatic\, and a best-selling author. He had to defeat several older and much better-known Democrats (including Adlai Stevenson\, Lyndon Johnson\, and Hubert Humphrey to earn the nomination. \nAnd then came the campaign for president! Nixon’s national reputation vs. Kennedy’s cool and charisma. With polls showing just a slight Nixon lead throughout the summer\, the two men agreed to something that had never happened before: a series of presidential debates. Those debates turned the course of the election and changed politics. They demonstrated the importance of television in future campaigns. Throw into the mix the rest of Martin Luther King Jr.\, Nixon’s phlebitis\, Kennedy’s mafia connections\, mystery votes in Illinois\, and odd campaign choices by Nixon\, and you have the makings of a fascinating campaign! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Medgar Evers: Is It Ever Too Late To Do The Right Thing?
DESCRIPTION:Medgar Evers Is My Hero.\nMedgar Evers\, a brave Civil Rights leader\, was assassinated in the driveway of his home\, murdered by a Ku Klax Klan leader bent on blood. \nWhat offense had Medgar Evers committed? He was trying to register African Americans to vote in Mississippi in 1963. \nHis murderer was quickly identified – but lived as a free man for thirty years until an unstoppable wife\, a dogged newspaperman\, and a brilliant prosecutor managed to get the case reopened.  On the fortieth anniversary of Medgar Evers’ murder\, I hosted the official National Day Of Remembrance and had the chance to meet and befriend his widow\, his family\, and many of his friends. I will bring their tremendously moving personal stories to life. \nMyrlie Evers hugs Barry Bradford’s students. \nThis multimedia presentation is very personal to me. You will be amazed by the story – it is jam-packed with inside information on the thrilling trial\, amazing anecdotes\, and a heavy dose of drama.  The trial of the murderer of Medgar Evers proved to be an important and emotional turning point in American law and history will come alive as you witness whether it is ever too late to do the right thing. \n  \n
