DESCRIPTION:Lyndon Johnson is one of the most complex men I’ve had to be president. He was capable of great cruelty and insensitivity. However\, as President  LBJ became a tireless champion of the poor\, the marginalized\, and the oppressed within the USA. This multimedia program covers the fascinating evolution of Lyndon Johnson’s thinking about the government’s role in guaranteeing freedom of equality for African-Americans. LBJ and civil rights may seem like an unlikely tandem. But ultimately\, other than Abraham Lincoln\, no president did more to advance the cause of African-Americans than Lyndon Baines Johnson! \nLBJ and Civil Rights\nWe will begin with a quick overview of Johnson’s personal sympathies regarding helping the poor and contrast it with his votes in the House of Representatives against civil rights legislation. Beginning in 1957\, LBJ\, as majority leader\, became a tentative ally of the civil rights movement. As president\, LBJ used all of his political skill and muscle to get Congress to pass two landmark bills that reshaped justice and upended the electoral map in ways that are still important. \nThe Civil Rights Act of 1964 finally ended legal segregation in America. The Voting Rights Act  (1965) established the government as a powerful ally in guaranteeing African-Americans in the South would have the right to vote. Few presidents have ever passed two more significant\, breathtaking pieces of legislation. They reshaped American expectations about race. \nThe Election of 1964\, on the surface\, does not seem particularly interesting. Lyndon Johnson crushed Republican Barry Goldwater in a massive\, historic landslide. DESCRIPTION:Bill Murray has had one of the most unique careers in entertainment history. Starting with Second City & National Lampoon\, Bill Murray became a tremendous sensation when he joined the early cast of Saturday Night Live. His deadpan\, snarky\, insincere comedy persona made him a standout\, even in the days of Jim Belushi\, Chevy Chase\, and Dan Aykroyd. \nAfter staying with SNL for only three seasons\, he made an immediate smash on the big screen. Bill Murray appeared in one of the highest-grossing comedy movies of all time\, Ghostbusters\, and such comic classics as Stripes and Caddyshack. \nBut over time\, this comic icon shifted his interest shift as he began to do more dramatic films and perform more supporting parts that allowed him to create unforgettable secondary characters. Performing for great directors such as George Clooney\, Sophia Coppola\, and Wes Anderson\, Murray carved out her unique niche in which he is often considered one of the country’s most versatile supporting actors. \nWe will examine his remarkable career\, but we will also talk about Bill Murray’s strange\, idiosyncratic personality and the frequently reported instances of inappropriate behavior\, which have clouded his reputation and stalled his career as he reached his 70s. \nThis multimedia presentation has a little bit of everything. DESCRIPTION:  \nUnexpected Movie Teams\nSome movie teams seem inevitable and natural.  The Ratpack. Fred and Ginger. But some films boast completely unexpected movie teams. For instance\, did you know that Sidney Poitier and Robert Redford co-starred in a terrific movie with Dan Aykroyd? Or that ditzy Gracie Allen co-starred in a musical with suave Fred Astaire? Sometimes\, unexpected movie teams make for a classic movie. That is the topic for this presentation on classic films – is it any wonder why I love public speaking? \nIn this unique presentation\, we will look at instances where movie stars with very different styles are paired together in combinations that are unique. Consider the teaming of Gregory Peck and Danny DeVito in Other People’s Money.  We will see how unexpected movie teams can create classic cinema.
