DESCRIPTION:  \nOur incredible learning community is going to have a (virtual) Election Day Party!  Republican or Democrat\, liberal or conservative\, all are welcome!  We will meet three times during the day so that I can give you the latest exit poll results\, information about voter turnout\, and updated prediction maps.  Between 5 and 6 pm\, we will have an open forum where you can ask any question of political scientist Kelly Jones-Wagy and me\, share your opinions\, and learn about the races.  Of course\, you do not need to join us for every session – join us to celebrate democracy\, even in an odd year!  This will be our celebration of learning\, friendship\, and democracy! \nVirtual Election Day Party: Tentative schedule: (All Times Central) \n11:30 -12:00 I’ll have lots of information about voter turnout and trends.! \n5:00 – 6:00 An hour-long open forum with elections expert and award-winning political scientist Kelly Jones-Wagy and me.  Before we start getting the first vote totals\, this is your chance to ask about any candidate\, race\, procedure\, or state- and we will answer live!  As time permits\, an open discussion where you can share your views and opinions will be available. \n9:30 —We should have significant results from the East. Before the West Coast results come in\, we will offer a characterization of the race. The networks can’t call an election before they have firm vote totals. DESCRIPTION:Jack Benny holds two unique and quite wonderful distinctions. \nFirst\, Jack Benny is almost universally regarded   by critics\, contemporaries and historians as having the best comic timing of any performer in show business. Jack Benny’s ability to take a pause\, stretch out a word\, or use a simple hand gesture or roll of the eyes to sell a joke influenced an impressive generation of comedians.  A talented student at the University of Nebraska – Johnny Carson – wrote his entire senior thesis as an analysis of  Jack Benny’s style of comedy!  Bennie’s influence can be seen in the work of  not just Carson\, but\, Bob Newhart\, Shelley Berman\,  Ray Romano and Jerry Seinfeld. \nSecond\, Jack Benny had a lifelong\, unquestioned reputation as one of  the nicest  men in all of Hollywood. He was charitable\, kind\, considerate and gracious. He traveled endlessly to entertain the troops during World War II\, refusing to take payment from the government to do so. He would appear at any charitable function at the drop of a hat. Professionally\, he was courteous and encouraging of talent. Marilyn Monroe\, who cast a suspicious eye on the motives of many of the men in Hollywood\, absolutely adored  Jack Benny. She recognized in him a genuinely kind and thoughtful person who truly appreciated her talent. Maryland’s reaction is typical of the way almost everyone who ever worked with Jack Benny reacted to him. If you came on his top rated radio show\, you are guaranteed to have an opportunity to shine. As he famously said\, “I don’t care who gets the laughs as long as my show is funny! SUMMARY:Who Killed JFK – Historian Presents a Modern Analysis
DESCRIPTION: Who Killed JFK?\n I’ll Tell You! \n \nThe murder of John F. Kennedy on November 22\, 1963\, shocked the nation. A suspect was quickly arrested and subsequently murdered. President Lyndon Johnson appointed a blue ribbon committee – the Warren Commission – to answer the question: who killed JFK? \nThey concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald was the sole assassin. Immediately\, the public was skeptical. Stephen King described Oswald as “a semi-educated hillbilly with delusions of grandeur.” How could such an insignificant loser pull off such a dastardly crime? And why did Jack Ruby\, accused of being a Mob member\, kill Oswald? \nWe have been through with whispered knowledge of conspiracies\, confessions\, and coverups. And so the public has asked for an explanation of the “magic bullet.” \nAnd the contradictory witness statements. \nAnd Oswald’s shadowy past. \nAnd all of the “secret files.” \nAnd all of the conspiracy theories. \nAnd all of the “mysterious deaths” associated with the assassination? \nBooks\, articles\, movies\, and documentaries have raised innumerable questions about who killed JFK. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis\nSo who killed JFK? I will attempt to answer as many of these questions as possible. First\, I will attempt to separate historical fact from theory & speculation. Second\, I will show what the historical record actually indicates happened. We have access to much more information today than the Warren Commission had in 1963/4 or the House of Representatives had in 1977. Third\, we will examine what modern computer forensics can tell us about crime. For instance\, the Warren Commission had access to the “Zapruder Film.”  Today\, we can use computers to enhance and analyze the film. We can use modern technology to analyze the path of each of the bullets that were fired. \nWho Killed JFK – Computer Analysis \nAnd we can use computers to isolate the mysterious sounds a Dallas motorcycle patrolman captured.  In 1977\, the House of Representatives believed that the recording showed four shots fired in Dealy Plaza.  The National Academy of Science\, among many other groups\, have taken the same sound recordings and used state-of-the-art technology to analyze them. What do we know now? \nYou may disagree with my conclusions\, but you will definitely learn a lot and come away with a new perspective on the historical record of who killed JFK. \n

DESCRIPTION:Free Program – Live\, In Person\, And Open To The Public! \nErnie Pyle was one of the greatest journalists in American history. After writing one of the most popular and widely published newspaper columns in the USA\, he became the voice of the average infantry soldier during World War II. In this role\, Ernie Pyle became legendary. \nA number of brilliant journalists covered the Second World War. Edward R. Murrow broadcast brilliantly from the rooftops of London\, William L. Shirer personally witnessed the entry of Hitler into Austria\, and Walter Cronkite tirelessly covered the War for the United Press. Each filed memorable reports that helped Americans better understand the War. \nMeanwhile\, Ernie Pyle carved out an unforgettable niche for himself. Instead of covering the “big picture” of the War\, Pyle traveled alongside the infantry. He became what we today would call an embedded journalist. Marching alongside the average G.I. Joe – a term he helped popularize – Ernie Pyle reported the “little picture.” He recorded the daily gripes and fears and small moments of humor encountered by the foot soldiers marching through Italy and then Germany. Millions of Americans read his column every day. His prose was crisp observant caring\, and sardonic. \nWhen the War ended in Europe\, Ernie Pyle returned home to New Mexico. Then\, reluctantly\, Pyle joined the forces preparing to invade Japan. He was exhausted\, his personal life was in shambles\, and he had a fearful premonition that he would die there. \nOn Okinawa\, Ernie Pyle was killed by a sniper. The grief felt by his millions of readers and the entire Army was all but immeasurable. Tributes flowed from the President\, American military leaders\, and journalists around the world. \nPerhaps the simple plaque erected by the soldiers who had marched alongside him would have been his favorite memorial. The School Of Journalism at Indiana University is named for Ernie Pyle\, and a number of books and a movie have helped keep his memory alive.
