SUMMARY:America's Closest Elections: 1876 and 2000
DESCRIPTION: America is the most technologically advanced country in the world. We are the only nation to land a man on the moon. Our research universities are the envy of the world. And in the year 2000 we were confronted by a distressing reality: the world’s oldest democracy was unable count the votes from a Presidential election. Long lines\, malfunctioning machines\, third party candidates\, badly designed ballots and a partisan judicial system threw the results of the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore into massive confusion. \nOddly\, the election of 2000 was not the first time a Presidential election went in to overtime! At our nation’s centennial in 1876\, the cliffhanger election between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel B. Tilden was even closer!  And\, as improbable as it may seem\, the final state to have its voting problems resolved (albeit in a controversial manner) was Florida! \nThis unique\, fascinating multimedia presentation looks at how America has twice coped with a bitter Presidential election too close to call. We will examine what happens when both the political and  judicial systems were unable to resolve the result in a way that inspired confidence in the American public. \nWe will also look at the long range results of the elections. The 1876 election ended the Reconstruction of the South and plunged America deep into a period of racial segregation. And the victory of George W. Bush in the election of 2000 ushered in the war on terrorism in ways that were very different from how Al Gore would have responded. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:The Ten Greatest American Presidents
DESCRIPTION:The Ten Best American Presidents\n \nHow do we determine who were the greatest Presidents? \nOne recent poll of the American public disclosed that they believed Bill Clinton is the greatest President of all time! \nAnother recent poll\, this one only of Republicans showed that 5% of them considered George W. Bush was the greatest President of all time! \nLet’s not ask the public! \nWhen professional historians are asked to compile their lists of the greatest Presidents\, they usually choose Washington\, Lincoln\, and FDR as the best. (apologies to both Presidents Bush and Clinton!) \nBut after those three\, the lists become intriguing.  Does Truman belong in the pantheon?  How about Jefferson\, Jackson\, Theodore Roosevelt\, Reagan or Polk? Can a case be made on behalf of Madison\, Cleveland\, JFK or Wilson?  The debate is fun and the comparisons exciting!  I will prevent my intentionally provocative choices in this fast moving multimedia presentation. \n

SUMMARY:Best Movies About Politics
DESCRIPTION:Politics and the movies are a match made in heaven! Movies need compelling characters\, suspenseful plots\, unexpected twists\, and a  great conclusion. Politics provides all the above and then some! In this great new presentation\, Best Movies About Politics\, I’ll present my admittedly idiosyncratic list of the best films ever made about American politics. Some are dramas and some are comedies. Some are old classics and some are very modern. Some are well know\, critically acclaimed Hollywood films\, others are amazing but obscure! \nBest Movies About Politics\nThis fun\, fascinating and fast- moving presentation is one of my favorites\, combing my  love of great cinema with a lifelong fascination with elections. And where else will you find a list that plausibly contains Henry Fonda\, Eddie Murphy\, Kirck Douglas\, George Clooney and Jimmy Stewart? From directors Frank Capra and Preston Sturges to Rob Reiner;  screenwriters Aaron Sorkin to Rod Serling\, some of the greatest talent in movie history have tackled the subject of elections in films that are entertaining\, thought-provoking and often unforgettable. We will look at clips from some of them and consider others as well! \nOf course\, we will leave time for discussion and for your choices Let’s see what everyone else chooses as the best movies about politics! \nThis is an online zoom presentation and completely free\, thanks to our friends at McHenry College.
