SUMMARY:Sidney Poitier
DESCRIPTION:Sidney Poitier is\, without question\, one of the greatest actors in the history of American film. \nAdditionally\, Sidney Poitier is the man who broke the color barrier in Hollywood. Like Barack Obama or Jackie Robinson\, he was more than just a symbol. He was a man of great talent\, skill and accomplishment. His success was not only his\, but a reminder of how America had squelched the talents of so many talented citizens.  \nMany fans of the “Golden Era” of “classic films” – including myself – have had to come to grips with the racist\, segregationist nature of those movies. Judy Garland\, Fred Astaire and Cary Grant were great actors and their films remain wildly enjoyable. But look at the films as a whole and you will see the leading roles are all played by white actors. Black actors appear as slaves\, domestics\, field hands\, or drivers. As great as Garland\, Astaire and Grant were\, it’s important to remember they were given opportunities denied to Lena Horne\, the Nicholas Brothers or any black man before Sidney Poitier. The racism of classic Hollywood denied us from appreciating some great talent. Just as the quality of baseball became better when it integrated\, so did movies improve after Sidney Poitier helped open the door. A society is stronger when all its citizens can participate. \nHowever\, his career should not be seen only as historic and groundbreaking. He was a great actor! Sidney Poitier\, in his best roles\, was simply magnificent. \nWatch “The Defiant Ones\,” “Blackboard Jungle\,” “Lillies Of The Field\,” “In The Heat Of The Night\,” “To Sir\, With Love\,” and “A Patch Of Blue” and you see a great actor at the top of his game. You can even see him in a movie with Dan Aykroyd! Poitier could be as suave as Cary Grant\, as intense as Humphrey Bogart\, as relatable as Jimmy Stewart. And unlike those other great actors\, Sidney Poitier went on to have a fabulous director of money making movies! \nJoin us for a fascinating multimedia look at the life and career of the great Sidney Poitier! \n

SUMMARY:Best Of Recent Broadway - Part 1
DESCRIPTION:With Broadway shut down until next year\, I want to share some of the best musicals to have played on ‘The Great White Way’ in the last five years. Today’s session will feature the backstory\, music and a critical review of two great shows: “Come From Away\,” and the Tony Award winning “Something Rotten. \n“Come From Away” is a powerful\, dramatic and uplifting musical about how the \n small town of Gander\, Newfoundland\, welcomed Americans who were stranded during 9-11. You would not think a musical with the 9-11 attacks as a backdrop could be joyous and inspiring\, but “Come From Away” conveys a powerful message of hope\, compassion\, friendship and caring. It is a completely unique work of theater\, filled with unforgettable characters\, terrific music and a plot that – I promise you – you will never forget. This is not only one of my favorite shows of recent years\, this is now one of my favorite shows ever! \n“Something Rotten” is a side-splitting work of musical COMEDY that had audiences screaming with laughter. Despite rave reviews\, it struggled to build an audience. Standing in the TKTS line\, I heard people say they wouldn’t see “Something Rotten” because it “was about Shakespeare.” Their assumption was that it’d be obscure\, hard to follow and pedantic. It scored ten Tony Award nominations\, far more than higher profile shows with known stars like Kristin Chenoweth and Kelsey Grammer)\, well known titles or familiar music. “Something Rotten” scores high with critics and enjoys sensational word-of-mouth from audiences that have discovered it. Like “The Producers” is is not meant to be anything but funny. One song got a standing ovation – in the first act! Ready to laugh? \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. If you cannot afford it or if you feel my programs are not worth $5.00\, you are invited to come for free\, I am unemployed but supporting a family\, so I understand with compassion living on a tight budget! SUMMARY:Cole Porter - Risque Master Of American Music (Part 1)
DESCRIPTION:We begin with a simple statement of absolute truth.  Cole Porter is one of the greatest songwriters in American history. Porter’s melodies were sublime. Equally unforgettable are his amazing  lyrics- they  were clever\, witty\, sophisticated\, original and naughty. Surprisingly\, although we tend to think of Cole Porter as simply the ultimate European oriented sophisticate – he was actually born in tiny Peru\, Indiana! \nThe list of songs written by Porter includes some of the greatest entries in the great American Songbook!  Consider: \nLET’S DO IT (LET’S FALL IN LOVE) (1928) \n NIGHT AND DAY (1932) \nANYTHING GOES (1934) \n DON’T FENCE ME IN (1934) \nI GET A KICK OUT OF YOU (1934) \nBEGIN THE BEGUINE (1935) \n I’VE GOT YOU UNDER MY SKIN (1936) \nIT’S DE-LOVELY (1936) \nPorter’s legacy was further assured by brilliant Broadway shows like “Kiss Me Kate” and “Can-Can.” But beneath the surface of this bon-vivant lay a tortured soul. Cole Porter lived in both psychic and physical pain much of his life. His life story\, his personality and his unforgettable music combine for a memorable multimedia presentation! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00.
