At Gettysburg\, Lincoln made one of the most memorable speeches of all time\, declaring\,| “that government of the people\, by the people\, for the people\, shall not perish from the earth.”  \nIn 1863 Lincoln showed his great compassion and deep faith by declaring the first National Thanksgiving Day – despite the carnage of the War. \nFinally\, as battles raged and riots erupted\, President Abraham Lincoln announced the \nEmancipation Proclamation. The purpose of the Civil War had shifted\, although victory against the terrorists was still far from certain.
