Poor people\, urban and rural\, were inundated with programs to try and lift them out of poverty. No president since FDR had done more to help the poor. \nThe lives of older Americans were made longer and better by Medicare and Medicaid. Youngsters got access to free school meals and to Sesame Street. Sweeping laws aimed to clean the environment\, beautify America\, and improve education. \nLBJ And The Great Society\nLyndon Baines Johnson had grown up amidst vast poverty in the Hill Country of Texas. At the same time\, LBJ could be mean-spirited\, even cruel\, and an insecure\, overbearing narcissist.
