SUMMARY:Holiday Inn The Irving Berlin Musical
DESCRIPTION:Come and celebrate the holidays with Holiday Inn The Irving Berlin Musical\, featuring music from the incomparable Irving Berlin! \n “Holiday Inn” is a brand-new stage adaptation of the timeless 1942 Irving Berlin omnibus musical movie. That classic film starred Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby. The original “Holiday Inn” movie\, from Paramount Productions\, gloriously featured some of Irving Berlin’s best holiday-themed songs. The unforgettable score included “White Christmas\,”  “Easter Parade\,” “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve\,” & “Happy Holidays. \nThe original film\, while wonderful\, is also problematic. It features a cringe-worthy blackface number\, a few songs that are just duds\, and a few racial stereotypes that are just awful. These elements can make the film hard to watch – and harder still to introduce to young audiences/ \nIn 2016\, Broadway showcased a brand new\, reimagined stage version of Holiday Inn!  This fast-moving and music-filled presentation will examine both the film’s backstory and the “new Irving Berlin” musical. As an extraordinary treat\, you will see rare clips of the Broadway production. The musical’s producers kept the original premise\, dropped the blackface (thank heavens!)\, axed the poor songs\, and added other great Irving Berlin melodies\, including “Heat Wave” and “Cheek To Cheek.” This reimagined musical is a total delight!  Join us to celebrate Irving Berlin and “Holiday Inn!” \nIf you are a fan of Irving Berlin\, classic holiday movies\, inventive Broadway musicals\, or if you just want to smile and soak up the holiday spirit\, you definitely do not want to miss this presentation! \nFREE REGISTRATION – IMPORTANT NOTE: This program is free\, but registration is required!  CLICK HERE TO REGISTER!

SUMMARY:The Marx Brothers
DESCRIPTION:The Marx Brothers were much\, much better than you remember! Their humor uplifted American spirits during the Depression and established new standards for comedy. The Marx Brothers combination of odd and unique talents\, including a harp playing mime\, a Jewish comic with the worst Italian accent and the most distinctive piano playing style\, and one of the greatest monologists of all time have delighted and baffled classic movie fans since the Depression. They performed alongside Lucille Ball\, sang music written by Irving Berlin and acted in comedies written by the great George S. Kaufmann\, yet many people dimly think of the as analogous to The Three Stooges. \nBut when you look deeper you see an amazing immigrant success story\, discover how American popular culture was changing\, and meet four remarkably different and interesting men whose films rank among the best comedies of all time. “Duck Soup” is rightly considered one of the greatest films ever made about politics. Both that film and “A Night At The Opera” are on the AFI list of the 100 best movies! Whether you are a long time fan of the Marx Brothers\, a skeptic\, or completely unfamiliar with their work\, you are in for a treat with this fun multimedia presentation! \nTHIS PRESENTATION IS ONLY OPEN TO MEMBERS OF THE LAKE FOREST – LAKE BLUFF SENIOR CENTER

SUMMARY:Offbeat Broadway Part 2
DESCRIPTION:The Tony Awards are right around the corner\, so let’s celebrate with laughs and some great music! I’ve learned that some Broadway musicals that are not big hits still produce unforgettable music\, delightful characters\, and fascinating plots. \nIf you think a musical about an Irish dreamer stealing a pot of gold from a \nleprechaun and coming to America where he gets involved in a  Civil Rights dispute sounds farfetched\, let’s learn about Finian’s Rainbow! After all\, who would have guessed a musical about singing pussycats in a London alley would be a hit!? Join me to look at some delightful and memorable shows that you may never have seen! \nHere is a sneak peek – we will look at “Xanadu” in which a struggling artist’s prayers for inspiration are answered when one of the Muses – the daughters of Zeus – roller skates down from Mount Olympus to inspire him to open a roller disco! (I am NOT kidding!) You are in for a fun and insightful look at shows like Finian’s Rainbow\, She Loves Me\, Honeymoon in Vegas\, Xanadu\, and Head Over Heels\, none of which was a huge smash\, yet each of which is delightful and important in its own way! \nCash/Check Payable to Barry Bradford \nBarry Bradford \nP.O.
