SUMMARY:Steve Allen: Renaissance Man of Late-Night Television
DESCRIPTION:Steve Allen: Renaissance Man of Late-Night Television\nThe Tonight Show has been a mainstay of American life for over 50 years. Each of the permanent hosts have stamped American culture in unique\, distinctive\, and memorable ways. Who was the greatest host in the history of the Tonight Show? That is a matter of personal opinion\, of course. But in terms of sheer influence on the direction and the look of late-night television talk shows\, the choice would probably have to be Steve Allen. If you love when Johnny Carson did his memorable “Carnac the Magnificent” routine\, you may not know that it was a direct copy from the Steve Allen routine called “The Answer Man.” Jay Leno was famous for “Jaywalking.” It was a clever routine – and directly copied from Steve Allen. In fact\, when Steve Allen appeared on the Tonight Show to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the program\, Jay Leno knelt and kissed his ring! \nSteve Allen: Renaissance Man of Late-Night Television\n As the first host of the Tonight Show\, he helped to shape our expectations of late-night television. But he was far more than just a superb comic broadcaster. This amazing man wrote over 75 books\, over 5000 songs\, appeared in major movies\, won awards as a producer\, lectured on philosophy\, history\, and ethics\, and was an accomplished jazz musician. There is simply nobody in the history of show business who can approach Steve Allen’s amazing range of talent and intellect. We will look at rare film clips\, listen to hilarious stories\, and  enjoy examples of Steve Allen’s music. I will also add numerous personal anecdotes about my acquaintanceship with Steve Allen.   This is one of my favorite presentations! I know you will love it.       \nPlease Note: This class Is offered through Harper College and registration is required.

SUMMARY:Johnny Carson The King Of Late Night
DESCRIPTION:Johnny Carson \n  \nJohnny Carson The King Of Late Night\nFor thirty years\, America went to bed with Johnny Carson.  He was a constant presence in American popular culture from JFK until Bill Clinton. But as much as America loved him\, they didn’t know him.  Carson has been called the most private man ever to be a public figure. In this fast paced multimedia presentation the life of the private man will come to life – interspersed\, of course with clips from his many wonderful TV shows – especially The Tonight Show.

SUMMARY:Jay Leno: Following Carson\, Building A Brand The Tonight Show
DESCRIPTION:Jay Leno: Following Carson\, Building A Brand.\nJay Leno\, host of the Tonight Show. \nThis presentation on The Tonight Show is an insider’s look at the unpredictable career of the fourth host of  Tonight .  Following Stave Allen\, Jack Paar and Johnny Carson was a brash and wildly ambitious comic named Jay Leno. Johnny Carson’s last week on the Tonight Show was a very emotional one.  The country had loved Carson and Tonight.  When Jay Leno left the stage in 2014\, the reaction was different.  Although his ratings were solid\, the country did not love Jay Leno.  In this installment of our popular series on the history of Tonight\, we will explore what forces shaped Leno.  We will examine his rise through show business and the controversial ways he has twice become the host of the Tonight Show. Jay Leno has carefully cultivated a controlled image as the “Nicest Guy In Hollywood.” The closer you look behind the curtain\, you realize Jay Leno is not quite as nice as he seems.  The battle for control of the Tonight Show brought out the worst in Leno and left many broken relationships in its wake. We’ll learn the behind the scenes story of Jay Leno\, enjoy many film clips and gain a greater perspective on Leno’s role in American Culture.   \nPlease note: this event is offered through Harper College and registration is required.

SUMMARY:David Letterman vs. Jay Leno: The Battle for The Tonight Show
DESCRIPTION:David Letterman vs. Jay Leno: Battle for The Tonight Show\nSteve Allen & Jack Paar each hosted the Tonight Show for relatively short period of time. The third host\, Johnny Carson held the chair for 30 years and made the Tonight Show the iconic program that it has become. When Carson announced his retirement\, the intense battle to succeed him between David Letterman (Carson’s choice) and Jay Leno (the safe choice) became the stuff of television legend. We know the end of the story: Jay Leno’s manager completely outmaneuvered a humiliated and embittered David Letterman. The two comics had been friends. That friendship is now just a distant memory. Letterman had been promised the job contractually by NBC; but the behind-the-scenes machinations of Leno’s manager changed all that. Jay Leno became the fourth permanent host of the Tonight Show Johnny Carson’s last week on the Tonight Show was a very emotional one.  The country had loved Carson and Tonight.  When Jay Leno left the stage in 2014\, the reaction was different.  Although his ratings were solid\, the country did not love Jay Leno. He bristled at the fact that Letterman became the favorite of the critics and very nearly lost his show in the first year due to his poor performance. Meanwhile\, Letterman scuttled his chances of remaining at NBC by launching a personal and bitter attack against the network that had reneged on their agreement to him. David Letterman has always presented himself publicly as an idiosyncratic crank. That is a very fair assessment of his real character. \nDavid Letterman and Jay Leno \nWe’ll learn the behind the scenes story of The battle for the Tonight Show\, enjoy many film clips and gain a greater perspective on Tonight’s role in American Culture.   \n  \nPLEASE NOTE: This program is offered through Harper College and registration is required.
