SUMMARY:The Crime of the Century – The Supermodel\, The Architect\, And the Insane Millionaire
DESCRIPTION:Click here to read more about this amazing story! \nAt the dawn of the 20th century\, America was riveted by the first celebrity murder case in America. Every element of this story is fascinating! \nThe murderer was already famous and so was the victim and so was the murderer’s wife. The venue was famous and so were the lawyers involved. The only thing missing was wall-to-wall cable news coverage! As I often say when I am speaking to audiences: “You can’t make this stuff up!” \nThe Crime of the Century – The Supermodel\, The Architect\, And the Insane Millionaire\nThe Crime: Stanford White\, the most famous architect in America was murdered on the rooftop of Madison Square Garden (a building he designed) by Harry K. Thaw of Pittsburgh\, the insane millionaire heir to one of America’s great fortunes.  With some justification\, Thaw obsessively believed that Stanford White had drugged and raped Thaw’s teenage wife – the very glamorous and very young showgirl\, Evelyn Nesbitt. And just to make the story even more tabloid-ready\, Ms. Nesbitt was the first supermodel in American history. You cannot make this stuff up! \nIf this amazing true crime story sounds just a little bit familiar\, it’s because the story of the murder of Stanford White by Harry K. Thaw and the involvement of glamorous Evelyn Nesbit was the basis of “Ragtime\,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning E. L. Doctorow novel\, an Oscar Award-winning movie\, and a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical\, both also named  “Ragtime” and the 1950s potboiler film “The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing.” \nThis fascinating\, one-of-a-kind multimedia presentation will bring to life the vivid celebrities\, lurid crime\, and amazing history of the first crime of the century. \nTHIS ZOOM PRESENTATION IS FREE! SUMMARY:Nellie Bly
DESCRIPTION:Nellie Bly was the of the most groundbreaking female journalists in American history! \nShe began her journalistic career before she was 20 years old. Working in a time when very few women had ever achieved a great deal of success in journalism\, Nelly Bly broke every mold and every expectation as to what a woman could do in the ‘man’s world’ of newspaper reporting Smart\, fearless\, and determined\, Nellie Bly fearlessly exposed the harsh\, unfair working conditions for mill workers in Pittsburgh\, drawing the ire of the richest people in the city. She then served as her newspaper\,s foreign correspondent in Mexico before being run out of the country for exposing governmental corruption. This dangerous assignment made the petite Ms. Bly the first woman ever to be an accredited foreign correspondent for an American newspaper! \nWanting greater challenges and rejecting the stereotypical notion that female reporters should cover “women’s stories\,” Nelly Bly moved to New York City. In her first assignment\, for Joseph Pulitzer\, she risked her life going undercover in a “mental asylum” in New York. For 10 harrowing days\, she was locked in an asylum where she was starved\, tortured\, and unable to secure her own release. Her bombshell reporting caused the New York City asylum to be shut down\, and New York agreed to major reforms in the way they treated people with mental health issues. \nToday\, Nelly Bly is probably best remembered for being the first person ever to travel around the world in less than 80 days. SUMMARY:Dorothy Kilgallen
DESCRIPTION:Dorothy Kilgallen is best remembered today as a somewhat flinty regular panelist on the game show “I’ve Got a Secret.”  \nHowever\,  this groundbreaking woman was a pioneer in journalism. And her role in attacking the conclusions of the Warren Commission became enormously important and highly controversial as Americans began to question the conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone assassin of Pres. Kennedy! \nDorothy Kilgallen was the first woman in America ever to be a full-time murder reporter. She broke numerous major scoops and often made national headlines with her fearless coverage of criminal trials. \nWhen Dorothy Kilgallen learned that a male newspaper reporter would try to break the record for the fastest trip around the world\, Dorothy Kilgallen decided to challenge him to a race. The world became fixated on the “modern-day Nellie Bly.” Her exploits not only made Kilgallen famous but were even fictionalized in a  major Hollywood movie!  \nThis fame led her to New York and a position as both a serious reporter and a catty gossip columnist covering Broadway. Her unique career led her into a major feud with Frank Sinatra\, put her in a position to break open the Notorious and controversial Sam Shepard murder case\, and to leak the story of Marilyn Monroe’s affair with Pres. John F. Kennedy. \nLong before America met her as a game show panelist\, Dorothy Kilgallen became the first mainstream newspaper Porter in the country to question the Warren Commission. She endlessly attacked them\, always hinting that she knew more than she was saying at the moment. When she died under very mysterious circumstances\, many people concluded that she was murdered to shut her up about what she knew about the assassination of JFK. \nI PROMISE that you will find surprises around every corner as Dorothy Kilgallen’s life is revealed. Throughout this fascinating multimedia presentation\, we will learn the unexpected\, unparalleled\, and definitely unique story of the life and death of the amazing Dorothy Kilgallen. \nRegistration and the program are completely free!

SUMMARY:Ernie Pyle - The Voice Of G.I. Joe
DESCRIPTION:Ernie Pyle was one of the greatest reporters in American history. after writing one of the most popular and widely published newspaper columns in the USA\, he became the voice of the average infantry soldier during World War II. In this role\, Ernie Pyle became legendary. \nA number of brilliant journalists covered the Second World War. Edward R. Murrow broadcast brilliantly from the rooftops of London\, William L. Shirer personally witnessed the entry of Hitler into Austria\, and Walter Cronkite tirelessly covered the War for the United Press. Each filed memorable reports that helped Americans better understand the War. \nMeanwhile\, Ernie Pyle carved out an unforgettable niche for himself. Instead of covering the “big picture” of the War\, Pyle traveled alongside the infantry. He became what we today would call an embedded journalist. Marching alongside the average G.I. Joe – a term he helped popularize – Ernie Pyle reported the “little picture.” He recorded the daily gripes and fears and small moments of humor encountered by the foot soldiers marching through Italy and Germany. Millions of Americans read his column every day. His prose was crisp and observant and caring\, and sardonic. \nWhen the War ended in Europe\, Ernie Pyle returned home to New Mexico. Then\, reluctantly\, Pyle agreed to be assigned to join the forces preparing to invade Japan. He was exhausted\, his personal life was in shambles\, and he had a fearful premonition that he would die there. \nOn a small island near Okinawa\, Ernie Pyle was killed by a single shot from a  sniper. The grief felt by his millions of readers and the entire Army was all but immeasurable. Tributes flowed from the President\, from the American military leaders\, and journalists around the world. \nPerhaps the simple plaque erected by the soldiers who had marched alongside him would have been his favorite memorial. It read: \n  \nAt this spot \nThe 77th Infantry Division  \nLost a buddy. \nERNIE PYLE. \n18 April 1945 \nTo this day\, Ernie Pyle’s unique life\, unforgettable writing\, and tragic death place him in the pantheon of America’sgreat correspondents. The School Of Journalism at Indiana University is named for Ernie Pyle\, and a number of books and a movie have helped keep his memory alive. Even Snoopy would regularly hoist a can of K-Rations on the anniversary of Ernie Pyle’s death on the island of Okinawa. \nPlease join me for a unique and powerful multimedia presentation! \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00.
