SUMMARY:America's Closest Elections: 1876 and 2000
DESCRIPTION: America is the most technologically advanced country in the world. We are the only nation to land a man on the moon. Our research universities are the envy of the world. And in the year 2000 we were confronted by a distressing reality: the world’s oldest democracy was unable count the votes from a Presidential election. Long lines\, malfunctioning machines\, third party candidates\, badly designed ballots and a partisan judicial system threw the results of the battle between George W. Bush and Al Gore into massive confusion. \nOddly\, the election of 2000 was not the first time a Presidential election went in to overtime! At our nation’s centennial in 1876\, the cliffhanger election between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel B. Tilden was even closer!  And\, as improbable as it may seem\, the final state to have its voting problems resolved (albeit in a controversial manner) was Florida! \nThis unique\, fascinating multimedia presentation looks at how America has twice coped with a bitter Presidential election too close to call. We will examine what happens when both the political and  judicial systems were unable to resolve the result in a way that inspired confidence in the American public. \nWe will also look at the long range results of the elections. The 1876 election ended the Reconstruction of the South and plunged America deep into a period of racial segregation. And the victory of George W. Bush in the election of 2000 ushered in the war on terrorism in ways that were very different from how Al Gore would have responded. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:Understanding The Election Of 2008
DESCRIPTION:Understanding The Election Of 2008\nIf the election of 2008 had been written as a movie script\, it could not have been more exciting. We faced the possibility that we would elect the first woman to the presidency\, the first African-American to the presidency or perhaps one of America’s greatest war heroes to the presidency. The nomination battles were thrilling\, the personalities were oversized\, and just when it couldn’t seem to get any more fascinating\, Sen. McCain chose  Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate! \nIn this insightful\, nonpartisan multimedia presentation\, you will learn about the backgrounds of each of the campaigns and candidates in the election of 2008. You’ll learn the very different election strategies that each pursued. We will look at the role of technology\, social media\, race\, television\, and the debates as factors in deciding an election like no other. The election of 2008 provides us a fascinating glimpse into the future of campaigning.   \nWe’ll see how social media and voter tracking began to replace television advertising as a means of motivating voters.  This effort led to long lines of voters across the country. We’ll also examine how one party began to utilize restrictive voting laws as a desperate means to try and ensure victory through voter suppression. \nThe career politician and war hero hero against a candidate with a painfully thin resume; a vice-presidential candidate with a penchant for gaffes versus one seemingly in way over her head.  This presentation on the election of 2008 is not to be missed. \nCOST \nI ask for a voluntary donation of $5.00. SUMMARY:The Democratic Convention Of 1968
DESCRIPTION:1968 Democratic Convention\n \n“The Whole World Is Watching!  The Whole World Is Watching! \nSo went the chant from thousands of protesters caught in a pitched battle with the police on the streets of Chicago is the Democratic Party sought to nominate a candidate for president. The Democratic convention riots of 1967 were turning point in history of politics and in the history of Chicago. Never before had live television cameras cameras captured what was later termed a “police riot” live on television.  While the battle of Chicago raged wildly on Michigan Avenue\, the tension erupted in violence and anger in the convention hall itself. \nAs the nation watched  in disbelief\, convention delegates and network reporters were beaten\, delegate credentials were forged in an effort to pack the galleries with Chicago city employees\, and the mayor of the city\, Richard J Daley\, screamed an obscenity at a Jewish United States senator on live television. \nIn this exciting multimedia presentation\, we will explore the roots of the events that culminated in the riots of 1968. From growing public frustration to the stalemate in Vietnam in the wake of the Tet Offensive to the insurgent campaign of Sen. Eugene McCarthy\, politics in America were thrown into turmoil. And just as the country seemed more and more to be spinning out of control\, we were hit with the shock of the public assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King and Sen. Robert F.  Kennedy. All of these events and many more make for an exceptionally exciting\, thought-provoking\, and mesmerizing presentation. \nPLEASE NOTE: There is a small fee to attend this presentation if you are not a member of the Lake Forest Senior Center. Please contact the venue for more information!

SUMMARY:The Ten Greatest American Presidents
DESCRIPTION:The Ten Best American Presidents\n \nHow do we determine who were the greatest Presidents? \nOne recent poll of the American public disclosed that they believed Bill Clinton is the greatest President of all time! \nAnother recent poll\, this one only of Republicans showed that 5% of them considered George W. Bush was the greatest President of all time! \nLet’s not ask the public! \nWhen professional historians are asked to compile their lists of the greatest Presidents\, they usually choose Washington\, Lincoln\, and FDR as the best. (apologies to both Presidents Bush and Clinton!) \nBut after those three\, the lists become intriguing.  Does Truman belong in the pantheon?  How about Jefferson\, Jackson\, Theodore Roosevelt\, Reagan or Polk? Can a case be made on behalf of Madison\, Cleveland\, JFK or Wilson?  The debate is fun and the comparisons exciting!  I will prevent my intentionally provocative choices in this fast moving multimedia presentation. \n

SUMMARY:Best Movies About Politics
DESCRIPTION:Politics and the movies are a match made in heaven! Movies need compelling characters\, suspenseful plots\, unexpected twists\, and a  great conclusion. Politics provides all the above and then some! In this great new presentation\, Best Movies About Politics\, I’ll present my admittedly idiosyncratic list of the best films ever made about American politics. Some are dramas and some are comedies. Some are old classics and some are very modern. Some are well know\, critically acclaimed Hollywood films\, others are amazing but obscure! \nBest Movies About Politics\nThis fun\, fascinating and fast- moving presentation is one of my favorites\, combing my  love of great cinema with a lifelong fascination with elections. And where else will you find a list that plausibly contains Henry Fonda\, Eddie Murphy\, Kirck Douglas\, George Clooney and Jimmy Stewart? From directors Frank Capra and Preston Sturges to Rob Reiner;  screenwriters Aaron Sorkin to Rod Serling\, some of the greatest talent in movie history have tackled the subject of elections in films that are entertaining\, thought-provoking and often unforgettable. We will look at clips from some of them and consider others as well! \nOf course\, we will leave time for discussion and for your choices Let’s see what everyone else chooses as the best movies about politics! \nThis is an online zoom presentation and completely free\, thanks to our friends at McHenry College. Follow the link below for FREE registration! \nRegistration \n  \n  \n
