SUMMARY:Civil War Stories - Reflections On Amercia's Deadliest War
DESCRIPTION:1860 & 1861 The Civil War At 150\nA Nation Divided – 1860 1861 The Civil War \nThe Declaration Of Independence boldly stated “We hold these truths to be self evident\, that all men are created equal…” The Civil War tested whether or not we really meant it. In 1860\, our nation faced one of the most crucial elections in our history.  Four great candidates stood for office.  The only real issue was slavery.  Today we see the practice of kidnapping human beings and holding them against their will as abhorrent.  In 1860\, the economy and social structure of an entire region of the United States was built on the premise that kidnapping and bondage were acceptable means of making money.  Our four week series begins with an in depth look at the Lincoln Douglas debates of 1858\, the election of 1860\, and the secession of  the Confederate States. In 1861 the Civil War really began.  We saw American citizens in revolt against the Constitution while holding millions of people against their will.  We saw personal tragedies unfold as the tender hearted Abraham Lincoln saw the body of the first American patriot killed by the rebels brought back to Washington DC.  It was Elmer Ellsworth.  He was a close friend of Lincoln’s. The death of Elmer Ellsworth represents the personal nature of this deadly fight. People happily brought picnic baskets to watch the First Battle Of Bull Run unfold.  By the end of the battle\, America knew was was not glamorous and victory would be difficult. We will explore how in 1861 the Civil War began a great test of America’s moral purpose\, military strength and future direction began. Today the battlefields of the Civil War are quiet. \nThe Battlefield at Bull Run \nWe will see how they were the sites of the greatest struggle in American history.

SUMMARY:The Declaration of Independence – America's Purpose Statement
DESCRIPTION:Signing Of The Declaration Of Independence \nThe Declaration Of Independence – America’s Purpose Statement\nIt was a moment that changed the history of the world forever. Throughout recorded time\, there had been innumerable revolutions\, revolts\, and separatist movements. But never had such a group of educated men decided to place the context of their revolution in the scope of human rights and do so with a written document that inspires people to this day. The bold committee that drafted the Declaration of Independence\, primarily Thomas Jefferson\, Benjamin Franklin\, and John Adams  understood that the revolution was about something more profound than simply political rights or taxation. They understood the importance of the moment.  Drawing on the natural rights of men\, they made the American Revolution a struggle for the concepts of equality and democracy. They saw a higher purpose for their actions. With a major American city under siege and occupied by soldiers their very lives were on the line. Yet the Continental Congress stood their ground by approving a document that contained the most important sentence ever written by an American.  The thrilling events that led to the Declaration of Independence and its actual meaning and influence on America will come to life in this exciting multimedia presentation. We will focus on the importance of the Declaration of Independence. We will see how it has inspired and motivated generations of Americans.  In addition\, we will see how Abraham Lincoln elevated it in the minds of the American people.
