Starting off as a snarky deadpan comic, one of the first breakout stars on Saturday Night Live, he made a series of wildly successful and hugely popular comedies, including “Stripes,” “Caddyshack,” Ghostbusters,” and “Tootsie.”

If we stopped the clock on Murray’s career there, he’d be remembered as a great comic movie star with broad appeal. The film career of his SNL castmate Chevy Chase might be a good eqiovalent.
