Adlai Stevenson
March 9, 2015 @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Registration required; contact the organizer.Adlai Stevenson is one of the most remarkable political figures of the second half of the 20th century. His entire career as an elected public official consisted of one term as the governor of Illinois. He twice ran unsuccessfully for president, losing by a landslide in each attempt. Yet so deep was his popularity and wide spread his influence that the Democrats gave consideration to nominating him a third time for the presidency. It is exceedingly rare for a man who has been trounced in a presidential election to get a second shot at the office. It is even more rare for someone to have lost twice and still be considered one of the greatest stars in the history of his political party. Such is the influence of Adlai Stevenson.
This fascinating multimedia presentation will look at his roots in downstate Illinois as the son and grandson of important citizens of the state. Click here to read about one of the most unique stories in his young life – the time that Adlai Stevenson actually took the life of a young girl with a rifle.
We will follow his government service through World War II and look at the personal qualities that led the Democrats to make him their standard bearer twice. We will conclude with a look at his inspiring and effective leadership as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
This is a life story that is inspiring and motivating while still being challenging and complex. His wit, wisdom, and worldview make for an intriguing presentation
