Adlai Stevenson

Adlai Stevenson is one of the most remarkable political figures of the second half of the 20th century. His entire career as an elected public official consisted of one term as the governor of Illinois. He twice ran unsuccessfully for president, losing by a landslide in each attempt. Yet so deep was his popularity and wide spread his influence that the Democrats gave consideration to nominating him a third time for the presidency. It is exceedingly rare for a man who has been trounced in a presidential election to get a second shot at the office. It is even more rare for someone to have lost twice and still be considered one of the greatest stars in the history of his political party. Such is the influence of Adlai Stevenson.
