Andrew Jackson – Reconsidered

May 19, 2016 @ 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

Andrew Jackson statueTraditionally, Andrew Jackson was seen as one of our greatest presidents. A bold, decisive leader who expanded civil rights to poor white males,  defeated the British at Andrew Jackson - Battle of New Orleansa key battle in the war of 1812, helped to open the frontier, and expanded the power of the presidency.  Jacksonian democracy became a phrase in the wake of his popular presidency and his image was placed on the $20 bill. A popular consensus grew that he was in the top tier of greatest presidents. (Talk about heroic – Charlton Heston even played him in a movie!)

Today, historians take a more critical view of Jackson. His actions led to a genocide among Native Americans, he was a racist, violent slave owner and did little to offer democracy to anyone beyond his supporters. Which view is more correct? You’ll have to attend this intriguing multimedia presentation to find out!
