The Dick Van Dyke Show is well remembered as one of the wittiest situation comedies in the history of television.

What is less well remembered is that Carl Reiner’s creation was a tremendously influential, but deceptive innovator. The DIck Van Dyke Show contrasts sharply with the situation comedies of the 1950s; in fact it ushers in a new era. It was the first sitcom to be set in suburbia, to feature both the world of work AND a fully developed home life as a central focus ,the first show to offer rich and consistent backstories for all the characters, the first  to present a modern housewife as well as the first show to feature a professional woman in the workplace.
