Sid Caesar’s Writers (Evening)

In television’s early days, Sid Caesar assembled what may have been the greatest collection of comedy writers ever gathered in one room. Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, Larry Gelbart, Selma Diamond, Mel Tolkin, Michael Stewart, Woody Allen, and others helped create the brilliant sketches that made Your Show of Shows and Caesar’s Hour into television comedy landmarks.

What was it like to write for the mercurial, demanding, immensely talented Caesar—and what did these writers learn from one another?

Even more remarkable is what happened after they left the writers’ room. Reiner created The Dick Van Dyke Show. Gelbart created MASH*. Michael Stewart wrote the books for Bye Bye Birdie and Hello, Dolly!. Tolkin went on to work on All in the Family, while Brooks, Simon and Allen became giants of movies and Broadway.

Through hilarious stories from the writers’ room and a look at the remarkable careers that followed, we’ll discover how this extraordinary group helped shape American comedy on television, Broadway and in the movies for generations to come.
