His movies were so popular and so distinctive that ‘Capra-esque’ became an adjective meaning a feel-good, uplifting film with a positive social message. From “It’s a Wonderful Life” to “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” to “It Happened One Night, the movies of Frank Capra were enormously popular, incredibly influential and historically significant.

Yet this most American of filmmakers was an Italian immigrant who helped America to see its many virtues clearly and movingly.
