The image of George Washington crossing the Delaware river is firmly ingrained deep in the consciousness of America. Many people remember, in general terms, that General Washington took his army on rickety boats across an ice filled river to attack the enemy around Christmas time. The image is so powerful and memorable that it has been used in  advertising, comicsand every avenue of popular culture.

A deeper look at the Battle of Trenton shows us that it is actually an unmistakable turning point, not only in the American Revolutionary war, but in the history of the world. Although the Declaration of Independence made a breathtaking statement on the rights of man, without the military victory at the Battle of Trenton, the Revolutionary war and the Declaration  would merely be obscure footnotes in world history. They would just be anecdotal evidence of another failed revolt.

Washington’s battle plan was audacious and his leadership was inspiring. After enduring a harrowing crossing of an ice filled river in a sleet storm in the middle of the night, Washington’s men had to suffer through a nine mile march in a blizzard.  And then, in less than ninety dramatic moments, the Revolution was saved.
