The image is forever etched in our minds: the world-weary Tevye, the milkman in Fiddler on the Roof, sighing and settling onto his cart or an overturned crate. It’s almost
impossible to imagine Fiddler without that quiet, weighty pause.
Yet that signature moment was born of pain—not just the emotional toll of poverty or the burden of being a father in an endangered community—but the real, physical pain of Zero Mostel.
When Fiddler on the Roof opened on Broadway in 1964, audiences were captivated by Mostel’s powerhouse performance. His Tevye was funny, fierce, soulful—and entirely unforgettable. But one of the most iconic, human touches he brought to the role came from an unexpected source: a bus accident.
In 1960, while crossing a street, Zero Mostel was struck by a New York City bus and nearly lost his leg. Doctors urged amputation, but he refused. After a long and painful recovery, he returned to the stage with his trademark energy—but not without lingering physical limitations.
Mostel—then 49 years old, 5’10”, and close to 250 pounds—added something deeply personal to Fiddler: moments when Tevye sits. These breaks weren’t part of the script, but Mostel used them to rest his leg—and, perhaps more meaningfully, to underscore Tevye’s emotional fatigue and spiritual weariness.
That small, unscripted gesture became a tradition. Nearly every actor who’s played Tevye
since—Topol (pictured), Alfred Molina, Danny Burstein—has echoed it, sometimes knowingly, sometimes instinctively.
It’s a powerful reminder that theatre is a living art form. Mostel didn’t just define Tevye—he shaped the very way the character moves through the world.

That was very interesting. I never knew that.
Hi, SHerry,
I’m glad you enjoyed the article. I’ve always thought the story was fascinating Zero Mostel did a revival of. Fiddler years after the original and I had a chance to see him in it. Truly an amazing talent.
I never knew that about Zero Mostel. Very interesting! Thanks for sharing!

What a fantastic story! I had no idea that Zero Mostel was in a bus accident. How awful and extremely painful for him to perform. He’s such an amazing actor!! I just loved him in Fiddler.
